Pollen count: Three ways to ensure better sleep if you have hay fever when counts are high

The pollen count has been forecast to be low across most of the UK today (May 17), according to the Met Office. But hay fever sufferers should still make sure now they’re aware of methods to prevent their symptoms, with high pollen counts likely as we enter into summer. While nasal sprays and antihistamine tablets can help prevent coughing and sneezing during the day, hay fever sufferers can often feel symptoms worse at night when pollen settles. This can interfere with sleep, and a lack of sleep has health complications of its own.

A.Vogel recommends a number of ways to get a better night’s sleep if you have hay fever – three being to indulge in a bit of housework, avoid late nights and try some herbal help.

Indulge in a little bit of housework

Vacuuming your bedroom everyday or as much as possible during the summer months is an effective way of removing pollen which has entered the room through open windows and from clothes and shoes worn outdoors.

It adds: “Dusting regularly will also help get rid of pollen which has invaded your bedroom and home.

Avoid late nights

Alongside hay fever disputing your sleep, lack of sleep can make hay fever symptoms worse.

It advises: “Try to avoid too many late nights during the hay fever season.

“If you need help dozing off or sleeping longer you can try a relaxing nomination of valerian and hops, a natural sleep remedy.”

Herbal remedy

A.Vogel recommends: “Take some Pollinosan Hayfever tablets with your evening meal, which will help reduce hayfever symptoms during the night.

“You can also use Pollinosan Luffa Nasal Spray just before bedtime to clear your nose of pollen, dust and other allergen particles, restoring the fluid and moisture in your nose, making it feel more comfortable.

“If you eyes are sore before you go to bed, soothe them with eye drops. That annoying irritation could prevent you from getting to sleep, even though your eyes are closed.

“Euphrasia, also known as Eyebright, is a herb which has a long traditional use for easing inflammation and redness in the eyes.

“Fresh extracts of this herb can be found in A.Vogel Eye Drops.”

While hoovering is recommended to help with hay fever, another household recommended is advised against.

Cutting the grass can encourage pollen to be released in the air, making hay fever symptoms worse.
